When the well - being is of the highest priority

The goal is to look like an SPA and feel like one too.

Performance, comfort and efficiency are three pillars of every hospital related lighting guide. Only the combination of those three can guarante for people’s well being, less fatigue, faster reactions, and fewer errors from the medical team. An important aspect of a good hospital lighting is also energy efficient consumption and easy maintenance.

01 Patient rooms

You can help your patients heal faster.

In hospitals, lighting should ensure longer sleep duration and shorten the time to fall asleep, while at the same time enhance the mood of patients with anxiety and depression. A patient's room is very complex for lighting, as patients need a calming environment which offers the possibility of customisation, and on the other hand sufficient lighting to satisfy needs of hospital staff.

When the doctor visits
___________
Examination illuminance = 1.000 lux
During the day general lighting is complemented with the natural light, which makes a perfect scenario for examination. Medis provides a uniform, glare-free lighting environment that is required for nursing tasks and simple examinations. It offers maximum illuminance of 1.000 lux in the examination mode.

When one is having visits, and the other is reading a book
______

Total light customisation = 0 to 1.000 lux

Soft, pleasant and glare-free illumination is the first thing to provide your patients. While the indirect asymmetrical illumination is generally prefered by the patients and makes the room appear higher, there are many other options that Medis can provide.
Medis is a flexible multifunctional luminaire, that offers the possibility to adapt to any individual situation with multiple predefined lighting scenarios and dimming possibility.

When the general illumination goes off
___________
Reading light = 300 lux
This light creates an individual bed reading atmosphere in a way that others sharing the room are not disturbed. The reading lights can be individually switched on via a cord remote control and gives your patients a freedom of setting their own routine. It illuminates the reading area with an average level of 300 lux without any glare.

When the light becomes your safeguard during the night
______
Illuminance = 5 lux
Sleeping like a baby is possible also when you're in a hospital, and it's not only the mattress that matters. Lighting can help improve patient’s healing process.
During the night in unfamiliar surroundings, orientation lighting is essential in order to help both nursing staff to perform simple tasks without disturbing the patients, and for patients to feel safe and in control. Medis provides a totally glare-free night illumination which delivers 5 lux illuminance.

Entrance
A place that should be as welcoming, calming and helpful as it could be.

A good way to plan your entrance is to highlight the service counter and provide easy orientation. Receptions usually have higher ceilings, that can be used to create a more welcoming open space and offer you more creativity when thinking about illumination.

Waiting area
Sorry mister, you will have to wait for just a minute ...

Waiting area is still a hallway, but at the same time a so-called adaptation zone for people moving from the entrance to a treatment room. That’s why it’s important to create an ambience that enhances the sense of security and reduces impatience. Waiting area should have a homogeneous light that simulates sunlight without causing glare, with individual accent light that give a sense of structure.

Hangout area
______
Who says that patients have to stay in bed all day?
Hospitals are striving to create pleasant and positive areas where patients and their loved ones can relax and make the most of their time together.
One of the way to achieve this is by using colours to mark the directions or by taking advantage of diffused lights from ceiling luminaries and reflecting them off the walls. This creates a comforting illumination without contrasts.

03 Hallways

A hospital hallway is just like the artery in a human body. And the reason is ...

Hallways are a connection to every single room in the hospital. Besides, this area is alive 24/7 and for this reason, the lighting should create guidance, safety, reassurance and support in the transportation from one location to another. Hallways are the biggest areas in the hospital and as such potentially the biggest money saver when it comes to efficiency.  Especially because there is normally no daylight in corridors.

Corridors
If hospital was a movie, corridors would play several reoles in it.
A vertical light that gives a sense of space without glare is usually a number one pick for every medical staff member in a hospital. Beside that, it is important to take into consideration that many people will be transported through the corridors lying on beds, which means that lights should be as low contrast as they could be, with a properly set glare control.

Day and night scenarios
During the day the illumination level should average 200 lux where corridors are used for navigation, workstations or waiting area, while normal transport corridors require 100 lux.
At night the light level can be reduced to 50 lux. Consider using a time control to automatically reduce the light when nobody is there and to enhance it when there is movement. In this way, additional savings can be achieved.

Examination room
Does a light have an impact on patient's emotions?
Of course! Help them get better with a well-balanced lighting level, good colour rendering and absence of glare. Make sure that chosen lighting solutions distract reflections on equipment, but at the same time meet doctor's requirements for observing and writing. The atmosphere in examination room should be bright and cheerful and promote a sense of security for patients.

Laboratory

What is your picture of an ordinary laboratory?

Lots of light and lots of white? You are not totally wrong here, as any laboratory needs a high visual performance lighting to do its work accurately. This, in fact, means just the right levels of brightness, light temperature, colour rendering, diffusion and intensity. Precision is the key, as any deviation from the right levels could lead to incorrect lab test results.

Dental office
You wouldn't want a different colour prosthetic than needed, right?
This is where lighting steps in. Speaking in those terms, there is a constant play of light and shadow going on in a dental office, with high levels of light where dental work is performed, and a shadowy area that promotes a well-being part of the experience.

Everybody counts ceiling tiles at the dentist office!
Because most of the time in a dentist office, patients look up at the ceiling, the illumination is of an extreme importance.
It should first and foremost create a great task lighting for medical stuff but at the same time offer comfort for the patients.

Hospital of the future
The ultimate goal in hospital care is, that patients don’t have to come into hospitals for monitoring, which would minimise errors, and optimise quality of care. There are some centres in the world, that are already trying the virtual hospital through a system that allows patients to note their drug intake, and weight and data like blood pressure, and be monitored from a distance.
